Sebastian Thomas
Ballad Over The Ocean
October 4th – November 15th
On the occasion of the solo exhibition by artist Sebastian Thomas, titled “Ballad Over The Ocean”, Nashira Gallery has begun a collaboration with Czernsy’s International Auction House of Sarzana, enriching the exhibition with a selection of original helmets and armor from the 16th and 17th centuries. This highlights an analogy between the epic and the contemporary, thus tracing an unbroken timeline.
Through the study of certain structural elements of medieval origin and the analysis of various aspects of early medieval society, primarily the religious one, the impossibility of a single interpretation emerges. From this, new critical perspectives arise in the works of Sebastian Thomas, disrupting the established order.
At the same time, in general culture, the interest in the Middle Ages increasingly connects with the representation of a universe dominated by magical, irrational, and chivalric elements. Many of his works depict knights in arms, offering new interpretations of helmets, shields, and armor, sometimes placing them in unusual settings.
The proximity of original armor, like those on display, allows Sebastian’s works to move beyond the abstraction of the feudal world, providing insight into the current human condition — an undeniable link between past and present, as evidenced by his iconographic research.
